Volga is a city in Clayton County, Iowa, United States. The population was 247 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Volga is located at (42.802583, -91.540562)[1] on the Volga River.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.8 square miles (2.1 km2), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 247 people, 103 households, and 67 families residing in the city. The population density was 314.0 people per square mile (120.7/km²). There were 114 housing units at an average density of 144.9 per square mile (55.7/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 99.19% White, and 0.81% from two or more races.

There were 103 households out of which 30.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.3% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.0% were non-families. 33.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 3.06.

In the city the population was spread out with 27.5% under the age of 18, 4.5% from 18 to 24, 24.7% from 25 to 44, 25.1% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 87.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $24,375, and the median income for a family was $29,821. Males had a median income of $22,813 versus $21,786 for females. The per capita income for the city was $13,440. About 13.7% of families and 18.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 17.1% of those under the age of eighteen and 29.8% of those sixty five or over.
